Check with your health care provider for information on how to best avoid this complication of diabetes.

Neuropathy is simply a medical term for pain. Specifically, it means nerve pain caused by the reduction in circulation that occurs in the diabetic condition. Many diabetics experience some level of nerve damage that is caused by their diabetes.

This condition causes multiple symptoms, but the most common include pain and, or, weakness felt in the legs and feet, or in the arms and hands. The extremities are the most susceptible, at least in the beginning. More serious cases may involve the organs that drive the body. It can occur in the heart, the digestive system, and in the sexual organs.

Neuropathy is simply a medical term for pain. Specifically, it means nerve pain caused by the reduction in circulation that occurs in the diabetic condition.

The longer one has diabetes, the more likely he or she is to experience neuropathy as it does develop over time. With that said, however, keep in mind that nerve pain can affect a diabetic at any stage of the disease. It tends to occur most often in those who have been diagnosed diabetics for 25 years or more. It occurs in those who are having difficulty controlling their blood glucose levels. This is a good argument for keeping up with proper testing with your blood glucose monitor. Be sure that you are using the correct strips and that they are unopened and still within their expiration time. An accurate reading helps you and your doctor to better assess what you need to help control it. Those with high blood pressure, more than 40 years of age, and the overweight are also quite likely to develop neuropathic pain.

Those with high blood pressure, more than 40 years of age, and the overweight are also quite likely to develop neuropathic pain

.Other factors that may contribute to diabetic neuropathy include smoking, alcohol consumption, injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, inflammation due to reduced autoimmune factors, and low levels of insulin coupled with high levels of fat in the blood.

Diabetes can damage the covering over the nerves called myelin. The nerves in this case can cease to send signals to the brain or can send the wrong signals at the wrong time. They can even send the signals, but more slowly than normal. It is also caused by the damage done to the nerves due to reduced oxygenated blood flow to the blood vessels that feed the nerves. Nerves need the oxygen that the blood brings them. With damaged circulatory systems, the nerves cannot receive their proper nutrients to continue to operate normally.

Other factors that may contribute to diabetic neuropathy include smoking, alcohol consumption, injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, inflammation due to reduced autoimmune factors, and low levels of insulin coupled with high levels of fat in the blood. If you are experiencing unexplained pain in any of these areas, discuss it with your health care provider.

Daily monitoring might be required.

There are some symptoms of diabetes that are common and could signal you to pay close attention to your condition and see a doctor for a professional opinion. If you are, indeed, diabetic it’s crucial that you begin a regimen of treatment and lifestyle change to help keep the symptoms and the disease’s progression to a minimum.

Some common symptoms experienced by those who may be in the beginning stages of diabetes or in a pre-diabetic condition include extreme thirst, nausea, fatigue without explanation, weight loss, sores that do not heal, frequent infection, blurry vision, and the feeling that you need to urinate more frequently than normal. It is important to note that there are some who are diabetic but have none of these symptoms to warn them. The best way to check is to ask for a blood sugar test. It’s simple and takes just a moment.

If your body is resisting the natural insulin it uses to convert sugar into energy for the body to use. In this case, the sugar remains in the blood where it doesn’t belong. The reason for excess body fat to create a diabetic condition is the fat that is present in the blood. Where there is fat in the bloodstream and cells, the body doesn’t convert the sugar from the blood into the cells. In normal operation, the body would convert the blood sugar to the cells to be used as energy you can really use. Another disadvantage to excess fat in the body is that this can cause your body to hold onto a low level inflammation, which also resists the effects of insulin to make the necessary conversion.

If your body is resisting the natural insulin it uses to convert sugar into energy for the body to use

.Diabetes, once diagnosed, cannot be removed completely from the body.

It can certainly be controlled to the point of being in an almost reversed condition through diet, medications, and exercise, but you will always need to keep up the monitoring.

Diabetes, once diagnosed, cannot be removed completely from the body. When you have been informed that you do have Type I or Type II diabetes, it will be a lifelong condition that will need to be monitored frequently. It can certainly be controlled to the point of being in an almost reversed condition through diet, medications, and exercise, but you will always need to keep up the monitoring. Using a blood glucose monitor with the correct type test strips is the way most people monitor their blood glucose levels. Diabetic supplies are expensive and many do not have appropriate insurance coverage to pay for them. If this is the case, discounted test strips can be purchased online from reputable re-sellers.

A new diet can help recently diagnosed diabetics to get their blood glucose under control. Eat well, exercise, lose weight, and monitor according to doctor’s orders.

What you eat has much effect on the levels of your blood glucose and the way your body reacts to insulin. Along with daily, or more often, blood glucose monitoring, your level of exercise and the foods you eat are crucial to your future health.

A good variety of foods is not only healthy, it’s more interesting. Don’t buy into the idea that your life will now be boring and devoid of delicious foods because you are diabetic. It’s simply not true. Change your eating habits just a little at a time for best results. This will be a long term lifestyle change and is not something you’ll do just until you feel better. Diabetics must be vigilant and eat healthy for life, literally.

You’ll eat a portion of each of the critical elements of a healthy diet. Eat carbs, fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins, but only the specific type of each element. For example, when fulfilling your daily carb requirements, you won’t eat a slice of processed ordinary white bread or a sweet roll. The fats you must eat each day will be fat that does you some good. You’ll eat a slice of fresh salmon instead of the fat contained in a piece of fried chicken cooked in a deep fryer. Drink tea or coffee, but don’t use creamers or other sugary additions.

You can eat more frequently, but eat less. Instead of eating 3 big meals, eat 5 smaller ones. That’s a good way to help lose weight. Drink the required quota of water every day. A good measure of how much to drink is to assess your current weight in pounds. Cut that number in half and drink that many ounces every day. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces of water. This helps to flush fats and toxins out of your body and keep all cylinders firing.

Fiber will be eaten by ingesting at least 5 good servings of veggies and fruits each day. Cut way back on salt in your cooking and on the table. It can be substituted with other delicious herbs and spices. Be aware that reading labels will perhaps surprise you. Look at the sodium content on that can of ‘healthy’ soup or green beans. Make your own instead or buy the sodium free or reduced sodium varieties available readily today. By eating better foods, you’ll help your body to function in the way it should and reduce the effects of diabetes.

Drink water, eat adequate fiber, and other food groups in proper percentage for best results.

Eating and Diabetes: What you eat is, of course, important. It’s the fuel that drives a body. While that’s true for everyone, it is especially important for those with diabetes to pay very close attention to what kind of fuel you are eating. Your diet is perhaps the most critical thing to pay attention to when you have been diagnosed with either Type I or Type II diabetes. Given the importance of your diet, it would be wise to consult an expert in the field. Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs) or dieticians would be quite helpful in planning your future diet.

Your food intake must be balanced with the insulin present so the blood glucose is effectively used. The first step is to keep yourself at a healthy weight, which includes BMI (Body Mass Index). Rather than use only your weight to determine what’s healthy, the BMI is calculated to include the amount of fat present in your body. Calculators are easy to find on the internet to help you determine your BMI without you doing the mathematical formula.

Your food intake must be balanced with the insulin present so the blood glucose is effectively used.

Carb intake should not exceed 65% of what you eat in a day. The best numbers there according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists are 55 to 60% of daily consumption. You do need carbs, as they are broken down into glucose to provide you with your energy.

Fiber, although it’s considered a carb, helps to lower the levels of glucose, which is very important for diabetics of all types. Eating 25 to 50 grams of fiber each day is recommended. Adequate fiber can be consumed at the same time you eat your carbs by choosing high fiber carbohydrates. Whole grain cereal, pasta, and breads, brown rice, fruit, vegetables, nuts, and beans or lentils are all examples of high fiber carbs.

Your diet is perhaps the most critical thing to pay attention to when you have been diagnosed with either Type I or Type II diabetes.

Fiber, although it’s considered a carb, helps to lower the levels of glucose, which is very important for diabetics of all types.

Fat consumption is ideal at 25 to 30% and protein at between 11 and 18% of the total daily diet. The best proteins are lean and include white chicken meats, white turkey meats, soy, and egg whites. Soy is important as it reduces cholesterol.

When you are diabetic, the glucose can’t be used for energy because the insulin is needed to move it into the appropriate position. If you don’t produce adequate insulin, glucose is unable to move into the cells as needed. Type I diabetics don’t produce insulin and it must be artificially introduced. Type II diabetics produce insulin but it isn’t strong enough to transport the glucose into the cells from the bloodstream.

When my husband was diagnosed with diabetes we both thought our lives would change drastically and not in a positive direction.

Dealing with Diabetes: Then I got to thinking about it. For years I’ve lead an active life but being postmenopausal I was finding that I had added a few extra pounds where I didn’t want them, and my husband could certainly do with losing a few himself.

He’s from the South and his favorite foods were definitely not mine, but rather than prepare two meals every night I I begun to eat a regular, unhealthy diet of too much fried food and definitely far too many carbohydrates. Fried chicken and mashed potatoes had to go.

It suddenly occurred to me one day that his diabetes was a chance for us both to get healthier and pursue a lot of activities we had never done before. It also gave me the opportunity to start eating the food that I much preferred – salads, fresh fruit, whole grain products and far fewer carbs.

My husband has type 2 diabetes but in the beginning he was forced to take insulin shots once, sometimes twice a day. I hated to see him sticking that needle in himself and one day after watching I threw open the fridge and food cupboard doors and started throwing things out. White pasta went to the garbage and various batter mixes that we used to fry with quickly followed. Sodas and sugary drinks were poured down the drain.

It suddenly occurred to me one day that his diabetes was a chance for us both to get healthier and pursue a lot of activities we had never done before.

I told him as much as I knew he wanted me to cook the way his mother did, the reason why both his parents and his five brothers and sisters all suffered from diabetes was because of the kind of food his mother used to cook. The truth hurts and I knew he was upset. Luckily he has the brains to know that I was right.

The next day I replaced processed white bread with whole grain bread. Whole wheat pasta was purchased along with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. No more chips, no more doughnuts and definitely no more sugary cakes.

I won’t say he didn’t complain at first but after a few months his weight had gone down enough that he had to donate all his 38 inch waist pants and purchase size 34 instead. I went from a size 14 back down to an 11 which is the size I wore when I was a teenager!

Now instead of sitting in front of the television in the evenings we walk. We even visit many of the local national parks and enjoy walking on Florida’s beautiful beaches. We can walk for miles!

The next day I replaced processed white bread with whole grain bread.

Whole wheat pasta was purchased along with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables.

No more chips, no more doughnuts and definitely no more sugary cakes.

He’s lucky to have excellent care by the VA, so he has regular checkups which include his eyes and feet which can become badly affected by diabetes. A year ago his doctor gave him some pills and told him to throw away all his insulin and hypodermic needles.
He still has to take an assortment of pills regularly and test his blood sugar at least once or twice a day but you see by his having diabetes our new eating and exercise habits has turned us both into fitter and healthier human beings.

The more accurate your readings are, the better you will be able to maintain a good blood glucose level.

Diabetic Testing Tips: Newly diagnosed diabetes patients can be overwhelmed with the whole concept of eating differently, testing themselves at home for medical problems, and the symptoms that come with it. Make it a little easier by knowing a few basics that relate to the home testing process. You will be testing your blood glucose readings at least daily or according to your health care provider’s instructions.

Newly diagnosed diabetes patients can be overwhelmed with the whole concept of eating differently, testing themselves at home for medical problems, and the symptoms that come with it.

First, know that the blood glucose monitor can be expensive but is usually available relatively cheaply since the monitor companies make their profits from the test strips that you must buy for testing. Some companies even give their monitors away for free, and you simply buy the strips from them. It’s important to buy strips that are specifically designed for the particular monitor brand and model that you will be using. Different strips won’t give an accurate reading.

Second, the expiration dates and coding are very important. Use your strips in the order in which you buy them and according to the dates on the packaging. Keep the strips protected from heat, humidity, and any moisture and always at room temperature. Open the strip you’ll use only when you are ready as dust and air can skew the readings. Clean your hands, but make sure they are dry when you handle the strips.

First, know that the blood glucose monitor can be expensive but is usually available relatively cheaply since the monitor companies make their profits from the test strips that you must buy for testing.

Pay attention to the coding for every new batch.

Finally, use the test strips correctly to get the best and most accurate readings from your monitor

Pay attention to the coding for every new batch. The newer monitors don’t require coding for each batch of strips, but many models still in use do require that you have properly coded strips for testing. The use of incorrectly coded test strips can mean that your readings won’t be accurate and that would defeat the purpose of testing in the first place.

Finally, use the test strips correctly to get the best and most accurate readings from your monitor. A few things to keep in mind are: strips should be straight and undamaged. Bent strips don’t work and may give a false reading. Too much or too little blood on the strip will cause either the test to stop or give you an error message. Your doctor can assist you if necessary in getting a good reading at home. They are the experts and are accustomed to fielding questions from their patients. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

When you have been diagnosed with diabetes you’ll have to find a way to afford the supplies you’ll need to test yourself at home. Save money on quality diabetic test strips by buying online from a company that sells overstock.

Diabetic Testing Supplies: Relying on home testing supplies means that you must look for quality products that are accurate, within their expiration date, and are reasonably priced. Since home testing supplies can be very expensive, look for ways to cut your costs but still use the best of quality.

If you were to use discounted diabetic test strips, for example, that are out of date you will not get an accurate reading form your blood glucose monitor. Another thing to watch out for is that you must use the same strips that are approved for your brand and model of monitor. Using the wrong strips, though they appear to be the same, can also give you a false reading.

There’s a great solution to purchasing diabetic test strips at a discounted rate, yet still receiving the highest quality products that are correct for your monitor. Buy test strips that have been returned or bought by distribution companies and are offered to you at a much lower price than if you were to purchase them at a pharmacy or other home diabetic supply store either in person or online.

There’s a great solution to purchasing diabetic test strips at a discounted rate, yet still receiving the highest quality products that are correct for your monitor.

Test strips that are for sale at a discounted price may be those unused and unopened boxes that are still within the expiration date but have been returned or sold to distributors as extras. This may be for a number of reasons, some of which are because the user has been placed in a nursing facility or hospital that provides them as part of the care, the user has passed away, or the user bought several boxes and then purchased a different monitor requiring a different type strip.

Instead of these diabetic test strips going to waste, they can be sold to companies that re-sell them. They are of similar quality to the type that are bought retail, but will cost much less. The thing to look for is the date of expiration. Also be sure that you buy the right model strip for your particular monitor. The boxes will be unopened and sold as if they were new.

This has become quite a popular way for diabetics to purchase their supplies of test strips as the costs of buying them brand new from a retail outlet is often cost prohibitive. Look online to find diabetic test strips for sale and compare the prices and quality. Don’t go without all the testing you need to do at home because the supplies are too expensive.

Use all the resources available to you to help you manage your health.

Health Risks – Cash for Diabetic Test Strips. Being a diabetic means that you will have to be aware of your health and how your body reacts to life and it’s stressors. From now on, you will be dealing with health risks that you didn’t have until now or could develop in the future. A simple cut on your foot will no longer be a minor thing that will heal in a few days. You could be nursing it for weeks instead. It can be frustrating and many become discouraged, but that doesn’t have to happen. There are many resources for you to help you deal with these annoyances and to help you watch for signs of bigger trouble.

People today that are diagnosed with diabetes are living longer than those in the past. Once you understand the condition and how you can help yourself you’ll avoid many potential problems. There are short term medical problems that occur and can be treated if you watch for them. Ketones, high blood sugar, and low blood sugar are things that you may experience on any day. You can learn what to do when those conditions occur so nothing more dramatic or serious occurs.

People today that are diagnosed with diabetes are living longer than those in the past.

The longer term complications are, of course, more serious. It’s important to take good care of yourself if you are diabetic to keep the inevitable complications from happening sooner instead of later. Uncontrolled diabetes leaves you vulnerable to problems that are harder to treat and last longer. Those with diabetes are more likely to experience strokes and heart attacks. Vision problems are common and can be treated. Feet and hands are prone to injury or wounds that don’t heal well due to the impaired circulation that diabetics commonly experience. Also affected are the kidneys, the skin, the nerves, and sexual health.

Some factors of your health cannot be changed. Your age, your heredity, your race, or your sex are fixed and there isn’t much you can do about it. The factors that can indeed be changed are smoking, a diet high in fats and sugars, exercise, excess weight, and control of your blood glucose. Try your best to get these changeable factors under control to live a healthy and more comfortable life whether you have been diagnosed as a diabetic or not. If you have, it will aid you in maintaining proper control of your health, and if you haven’t, you will experience a healthier sense of well being.

If you have purchased Part B insurance your needs will be covered.

Seniors – Cash for diabetic test strips. When you reach 65 you will be eligible for certain medical benefits. If you are diabetic you may be able to receive blood glucose test monitors, blood glucose test strips, lancets, calibration solutions for the meters, and more. If you subscribe to Part B Medicare, these items may be covered.

Test strips are available but only in limited quantities. You are allowed 100 strips per month only if you are diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Type II diabetics are allowed 100 strips every 3 months. Sometimes more are needed, but in order to receive them from Medicare, your physician will have to document your needs and renew the document every six months afterwards.

If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes, don’t hesitate to visit your doctor and have yourself checked.

You must a prescription written for you by your doctor to receive test strips. It must be written anew every six months. It must tell the number of strips and lancets you are to receive. It should state whether or not you are insulin dependent. Prescriptions that state ‘as needed’ by the physician will not be accepted by Medicare. Be sure the doctor states the specific number of times per day that you should monitor your glucose levels.

Insulin pumps could be covered and are a recent addition to coverage. You might be eligible to use a pump and all of the relevant supplies, but only if you are insulin dependent. The range that you test at in a c-peptide test will be another criterion that is used. Diabetes education and training in the use of the pump are also covered. You must attend the training if you use the pump.

You are allowed 100 strips per month only if you are diagnosed with Type I diabetes

Type II diabetics are allowed 100 strips every 3 months.

Medical nutrition therapy and diabetes education are provided and help you to self-manage your condition. Ten hours of training is available to you and is covered by your insurance. The training is most often conducted in a group and you will need a prescription from your doctor to attend. You will be entitled to attend an additional 2 hours of training each year with a prescription to keep you up to date and give you a refresher course. Medical nutrition therapy can be taken for up to 3 hours the first year you are diagnosed and 2 hours more each year thereafter.

If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes, don’t hesitate to visit your doctor and have yourself checked. Most of your supplies and visits are covered and therefore you should not hesitate.

There are many different side effects that diabetes can cause sufferers, and one of these is depression. Both health problems can be treated in tandem although the relationship between the two is not fully understood.

Many folks who are diagnosed with diabetes find it such a life-changing condition that they focus on the negative, causing depression. Indeed it has been suggested that people suffering from on-going depression have a greater chance of developing Type II diabetes.

People who feel that they can’t cope often get depressed and make very poor decisions where their overall health is concerned. They may fail to exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet which in turn exacerbates the problem causing weight gain, risks for cardiovascular disease, and circulatory problems etc. Basically the depressed diabetic feels that their life has been foreshortened anyway, so what does it matter.

Diabetes can be the cause of an increasing number of health problems,
especially if it isn’t managed properly.

Depression becomes a nasty syndrome. The diabetic will slowly start failing to perform regular functions and may eventually stop thinking logically. This can lead to the diabetic neglecting to test blood sugar levels regularly and if a healthy diet is not being maintained, they are at increased risk of diabetic shock and coma.

Diabetic Depression Management

A good program of self-management is essential for helping the diabetic who suffers from depression. Fitness levels need to be increased, along with overall health management and weight loss to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Once the patient starts to lose weight and feel healthier their self-esteem and a more positive attitude will increase their quality of life.

Improved diabetes management can also be achieved with psychotherapy. As depression decreases again the patient will feel more positive about their life. Medications may also improve the diabetic’s attitude and long-term outlook.

If you live with a diabetic it will probably fall to you to not only monitor the way she or he handles the disease but it will also be necessary to be constantly aware of their mental health.

Encourage the diabetic to eat a healthy diet regularly and exercise.

Remind them that they are still the same person that you loved before.

and their lives are no less valuable because they are diabetic.

Tell them also that they can still live useful, productive and healthy lives.

If a diabetic you live with exhibits signs of depression they may lose interest in things that they enjoyed before. They may express sadness and hopelessness more often than prior to their diagnosis and also suffer from headaches or other pains more often than previously.

By ignoring these symptoms the diabetic becomes more at risk for serious medical problems. If they failed to eat regularly and monitor their blood sugar levels there is an increased risk of their going into diabetic shock or coma.

If you think you know somebody who is dealing with diabetes and is sliding into depression, do everything you can to seek medical assistance on their behalf.

Over 10% of the US population suffer from depression and a large number of them are diabetics, so mental health experts and diabetes educators are all well versed in dealing with this difficult problem.
