Seniors – Cash for diabetic test strips. When you reach 65 you will be eligible for certain medical benefits. If you are diabetic you may be able to receive blood glucose test monitors, blood glucose test strips, lancets, calibration solutions for the meters, and more. If you subscribe to Part B Medicare, these items may be covered.
Test strips are available but only in limited quantities. You are allowed 100 strips per month only if you are diagnosed with Type I diabetes. Type II diabetics are allowed 100 strips every 3 months. Sometimes more are needed, but in order to receive them from Medicare, your physician will have to document your needs and renew the document every six months afterwards.
If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes, don’t hesitate to visit your doctor and have yourself checked.
You must a prescription written for you by your doctor to receive test strips. It must be written anew every six months. It must tell the number of strips and lancets you are to receive. It should state whether or not you are insulin dependent. Prescriptions that state ‘as needed’ by the physician will not be accepted by Medicare. Be sure the doctor states the specific number of times per day that you should monitor your glucose levels.
Insulin pumps could be covered and are a recent addition to coverage. You might be eligible to use a pump and all of the relevant supplies, but only if you are insulin dependent. The range that you test at in a c-peptide test will be another criterion that is used. Diabetes education and training in the use of the pump are also covered. You must attend the training if you use the pump.
